Ojdå, är det redan november! Av rapporterna hemifrån förstår vi att hösten har kommit, även om den än så länge varit mild. Här märks det inte alls, 24 grader i vattnet och upp till 28 i luften.
Vi lättar ankar och styr mot El Hierro i fin vind. Den förhärskande vinden här är nordost och idag passar det oss bra. Vi ska mot västsydväst och får akterliga vindar, Vackra Vera styr och vi övervakar.
Vi har försökt i flera dagar att få kontakt med marinan i La Estaca utan att lyckas så när vi närmar oss är det lite spännande om vi ska få hamnplats eller inte. Men vi hade inte behövt oroa oss. Vi är välkomna, det finns gott om lediga platser, och den vakthavande hamnpolisen hjälper oss att förtöja. Jo, ni läste rätt, hamnpolisen sköter även avgifterna till marinan.

El Hierro, ”Järnet”, är den näst minsta av de kanariska öarna (Graciosa är betydligt mindre) och den minst turistiska. Hit går inga charterflyg. Ön är vulkanisk och bara 30 km från ena änden till den andra.
Ön har i modern tid varit besparad från vulkanutbrott men så sent som 2012 var det ett vulkanutbrott i havet strax syd om öns södra udde.
Vi tar bussen till huvudstaden Valverde, som ligger en bit in i landet. Här bor ca 2000 personer och huvudstadslivet präglas av lugn. I alla fall tills stora Halloween paraden drar fram. För oss verkar det vara samtliga öns sjuåringar och yngre som deltar, påhejade av minst en förälder. Antagligen för att väcka de döda leds processionen av en bil som spelar hög musik.
I staden finns inga hus som är högre än tre våningar, för så har det bestämts. Vi beser den fina kyrkan från 1700-talet och imponeras lite av rådhusets arkitektur.

Om man vill se El Hierro är det svårt att klara sig med att bara åka lokal buss. Vi hyr en liten bil och åker först till La Restinga. Det är öns andra hamn, som är belägen på sydkusten. Här domineras livet av dykare.
Vattnet är fantastiskt klart och vi ser ett antal grupper av dykare och ”wannabee-dykare”. Själva nöjer vi oss med att snorkla strax utanför hamnen. Mycket vackra fiskar finns det att titta på.
Visste ni att El Hierro en gång i tiden betraktades som världens västligaste utpost och därför gavs äran att hålla nollmeridianen ända fram till 1885 då den förflyttades till Greenwich i London, England? Nä, det visste inte vi heller. På platsen för nollmeridianen har byggts en fyr och långt senare ett monument som man kan nå via en kort vandring. Och det måste vi såklart besöka.
Vägen dit går över ett högt berg och ner till havsnivån. Vägen är asfalterad, men otroligt smal och slingrig. Mer än fyrtio minuters serpentinvägar kan trötta ut vem som helst, särskilt när man möter snabba spanjorer med fyrhjulsdrift i de snävaste kurvorna och man själv råkar ha ytterkurva. Efter att ha överlevt serpentinerna nöjer vi oss för dagen.

El Hierro är inte bara populärt för sin dykning. Hit åker också många vandrare. Vi provade på en lätt vandring ner till nollmeridiansmonumentet men lockas också av lite större utmaningar. Vi åker till utsiktspunkten Mirador Jinama. Här får vi utsikt över hela öns nordväst-sida ”El Golfo”. Här börjar också en väldigt vacker vandringsled på drygt fyra km.
Efter bara några hundra meter inser vi att höjdskillnaden på dessa 4 km är nästan tusen meter, vilket bedöms som för mycket för Fredriks utslitna knän. Men vi kan i alla fall säga att vi gått en del av den vackra leden.
I stället far vi ner till El Golfo och badar i den blå grottan, Charco Azul. Efter en lång och brant vandring når vi en otrolig liten lagun där Atlantens vågor slår in över klipporna.

Ett problem med El Hierro är vindarna. Eftersom det nästan alltid blåser från NE så är det lättare att ta sig hit än härifrån. Vinden kommer från NE så vi förlänger vår vistelse på ön med ett dygn.

Vinden skulle enligt prognoserna ha vridit åt ost och vi tänkte segla till ön La Palma som ligger norr om El Hierro. Men livet blir inte alltid som vi vill utan nu blåser det snudd på nordliga vindar, vilket innebär pin-kryss till La Palma! Då utnyttjar vi sjökrigskonstens andra grundregel och ”eftersträvar flexibilitet”, dvs. ”tänker om”. La Palma får helt enkelt vänta på oss. Därför seglar vi i stället till La Gomera utan att behöva kryssa. Vi sträcker för babords halsar (vinden in från babords sida) upp till Valle Gran Rey. När vi är nästan framme möter vi en liten flock pilot whales på nära håll.
Det är imponerande och fascinerande. När solen sänker sig i väster är vi väldigt nöjda med dagen.

Åter till platsen där vi låg till ankars för en vecka sedan. Vi trivs här, sjösätter jollen, åker in till byn, handlar och äter lunch. Maria hittar några spanska kokböcker så nu ska här lagas Tapas och Mojos på äkta spanskt manér. Vi har nu återupptagit simdelen av vårt motionsprogram som legat nere när vi har varit i hamn.

Oops, it's already November! From the reports that we get from home, we understand that autumn has arrived, although so far it has been mild. In the Canaries it’s still 28 degrees C and 24 in the water.
We leave La Gomera and sail towards El Hierro in nice wind. The prevailing wind here is northeast and today it suits us well. We are going west-southwest and get tailwinds and the windrudder is steering while we are monitoring.
We have been trying for several days to get in touch with the marina in La Estaca without success so as we approach it is a little exciting whether we will get a berth or not. But we shouldn’t have worried. We are welcome, there are plenty of places available, and the harbor police on duty helps us to moor. Yes, that’s correct, the harbor police also handle the fees for the marina.

El Hierro, "Iron", is the second smallest of the Canary Islands (Graciosa is considerably smaller) and the least touristic. There are no charter flights to this island. The island is volcanic and only 30 km from one end to the other. In modern times, the island has been spared from volcanic eruptions, but as recently as 2012 there was a volcanic eruption in the sea just south of the island's southern tip.
We take the bus to the capital, Valverde, which is a bit inland. About 2,000 people live here and life in the capital is characterized by calm. At least until the big Halloween is passing us. It seems that all the island's seven-year-olds and younger participate, cheered on by at least one parent. Presumably to wake the dead, the procession is led by a car playing loud music.
In the city there are no houses that are higher than three stories, because that’s the way it has been decided. We visit the beautiful church from the 18th century and are impressed by the architecture of the town hall.

If you want to explore El Hierro, it is difficult to get around only with the local bus. We rent a small car and drive to La Restinga. It is the island's second port, which is located on the south coast. Life here is dominated by divers. The water is amazingly clear and we see a number of groups of divers and "wannabee divers". We are satisfied with snorkeling just outside the harbor, where there are a lot of very beautiful fishes to look at.
Did you know that El Hierro was once considered the world's most westerly outpost and was therefore given the honor of holding the prime meridian until 1885 when it was moved to Greenwich in London, England? Well, we didn't know that either. A lighthouse was built on the site of the prime meridian and much later also a monument that can be reached via a short hike. And of course we have to visit the monument. The road goes over a high mountain and down to sea level. The road is paved, but incredibly narrow and winding. More than forty minutes of serpentine roads makes anyone tired, especially when you meet fast Spaniards with a four-wheel drive in the hairpin curves and we have the outer lane. After surviving the serpentine roads, we are satisfied for the day.

El Hierro is not only popular for its diving. It’s popular among hikers too. We drive to the viewpoint Mirador Jinama and get an amazing view of the entire northwest side of the island "El Golfo". A very beautiful hiking trail of just over four km begins here. After only a few hundred meters we realize that the height difference of these 4 km is almost a thousand meters, which is considered too much for Fredrik's bad knees. But we can at least say that we have walked part of the beautiful trail.
Instead, we drive down to El Golfo to swim in the cave, Charco Azul. After a long and steep hike, we reach an incredible small lagoon where the waves of the Atlantic crash over the rocks.

One problem with El Hierro is the wind direction. Since it almost always blows from the NE, it is easier to get here than from here. The wind comes from the NE so we extend our stay on the island by a day.

According to the forecasts, the wind should have turned to the east and we were thinking of sailing to the island of La Palma, which is situated north of El Hierro. But life doesn't always turn out the way we want, we get almost northerly winds, which means the wind in the face and tacking all the way to La Palma! We apply the second basic rule of the naval art and "strive for flexibility", i.e. "rethinks". La Palma will simply have to wait for us. We sail to La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey without having to tack. Just outside La Gomera, we see some pilot whales really close. It is impressive and fascinating. When the sun sets in the west, we are very happy with the day.

We are now back in the same bay where we anchored a week ago. We like it here. We launch the dinghy and visit the village for shopping and lunch. Maria finds some Spanish and Canarian cookbooks, so now we can make Tapas and Mojos in the authentic Spanish way. After spending a few days in a harbor, it’s nice to be able to take a swim from the boat again and we resume the swimming part of our exercise program.
