Eftersom det är söndag på Fuerteventura är det mesta stängt. Vi tar det lugnt, städar och går lite promenader. På kvällen blir vi inbjudna till några norska seglarvänner på en trevlig ”sundowner”i sittbrunnen. De hade tänkt segla runt i Karibien i vinter men blivit så försenade att de beslutat sig för att stanna på Kanarieöarna i stället. De hade verkligen haft otur med späckhuggare. Först blev de rejält attackerade när de nästan kommit fram efter att ha korsat Biscayabukten. Det mötet slutade med att de fick bogseras till hamn, lyftas upp på land och sedan fem veckors lagning av roder och styrning. När de så småningom kunde fortsätta hade de blivit attackerade ytterligare en gång. Visserligen fick de bara mindre skador men det hade lett till ytterligare förseningar. Verkligen tråkigt!
Vi känner oss väldigt nöjda med att vi beslutat oss för att ta en annorlunda segelrutt på hemvägen.

Längs Fuerteventuras ostkust blåser det oftast en frisk vind som följer kusten. Dessutom säger vår cruisingguide att strömmen nästan alltid är sydlig här.
Vi kastade loss och hade tänkt segla till ön Isla del Lobo som ligger utanför nordost-hörnet av Fuerteventura. Men kryss, krabb sjö och motström gjorde att vi (Maria) ändrade oss och gick i stället in till marinan Puerto del Rosario. Marinan, som saknade både toaletter och duschar var väl inget att skriva i loggboken om men hamnpoliserna, som tog upp hamnavgiften, var trevliga när de trots tv-övervakning av marinan väl fattat att vi hade förtöjt.
Vi var lite loja efter dagens kryssande så det fick bli middag ombord och som avslutning en liten kvällspromenad på stan.

Den friska nordostliga vinden fortsätter och vi kryssar oss norrut. Eftersom vi (Fredrik) anar att vinden och vågorna kommer att förstöra nattsömnen för oss på Isla del Lobo fortsätter vi till Lanzarote och ankrar utanför Playa del Pozo. Här är det skyddat från vågorna men vinden är frisk trots att vi ligger i en vik på läsidan av Lanzarote. Tänk så förvånad man kan bli ibland. Men vi ligger i alla fall tryggt fast med ankaret.

Vi ligger kvar på ankarplatsen och hoppas att vinden ska avta under dagen. Enligt vår cruisingguide ska det här vara en av kanarieöarnas bästa ankarplatser. Det kanske stämmer kanske om det är stiltje, men det blir det inte under dagen. Vi pysslar ombord och avstår från at försöka ta oss i land med gummijollen. Trots att vågorna är behagliga där vi ankrat ser vi hur de bryter när de når den vackra sandstranden. Vi bokar i stället plats för Salsa i marina Lanzarote till påföljande dag.

Vi tar upp ankaret tidigt och får ännu en frisk kryss upp till marina Lanzarote som ligger i Lanzarotes huvudstad Arrecife. Marinan är ganska nybyggd och väldigt välskött. Längs kajen ligger fina butiker och restauranger tätt. Antagligen beror det inte på att normala marinagäster är särskilt spendersamma utan på att det alldeles intill marinan finns en kaj för kryssningsfartyg. Lämpligt nog passerar kryssningsfolket längs marinans kajpromenad när de vill promenera till stadens centrum. Inspirerade av kryssningsfolket känner vi oss på spenderhumör och äter en utmärkt tvårätters middag på staden. Tuna tartar och sedan bläckfisk smakar utmärkt när man får skölja ner det med vitt vin från Lanzarotes vulkaniska vinområde.

I marinan finns en biluthyrare men det kontoret har inga lediga uthyrningsbilar. Därför tar vi en buss till flygplatsen som ligger i närheten och hyr en bil.
Lanzarote är den fjärde största ön av de kanariska öarna. Bebyggelsen är oftast väldigt låg och nästan genomgående vitkalkad. Vi vill se hela ön och börjar med att besöka bodegan Rubicon som ligger i det vulkaniska vindistriktet. Vi förundras över att det blir något vin alls när man ser vinrankorna. Varje vinranka är placerad i en liten krater med en stenmur runt. Kratern är till för att rankan ska komma ner under slagglagret och hitta jord. Stenmuren är till för att inte kratern ska rasa pga. vinden och begrava vinrankan.  All skörd måste ske för hand.

Vi provar både rött och vitt vin och köper med oss två flaskor friskt, torrt, vitt vin.
Det är hett idag så vi fortsätter till Playa del Mujeres som är granne till den vik där vi låg till ankars och svalkar oss i de häftiga vågorna. Det blåser lika frisk idag som när vi låg här och vi inser att ett landningsförsök med jollen säkert hade slutat illa.
2023-03-25
César Manrique heter öns stora artist och arkitekt. Det påstås vara han som varit pådrivande för att husen ska vara låga och vita. Vi tar bilen till norra kusten och tittar på utsiktsplatsen Mirador del Plata. Här har man gjort ett stort arbete för att själva utsiktsplatsen skall vara trevlig och se fin ut. Från platsen ser man ut över grannön La Graciosa som är nationalpark. Här har vi legat till ankars för sex år sedan efter att ha fått tillstånd från myndigheterna. Det hade vi gärna gjort på nytt men något svar på vår ankringsbegäran har vi inte fått.

I stället för att sörja över detta åker vi vidare till ett anat av Manrigues storverk, Jameos del Agua. Här har arkitekten utnyttjat en lång lavatunnel för att bygga en fantastisk anläggning med underjordiskt auditorium, damm och flera restauranger. Vi kan inte låta bli att vara imponerade trots att man lite försynt kan undra hur man ska få det här att gå ihop ekonomiskt.

Det är söndag och vi förbereder oss för att lämna Lanzarote och Spanien och segla till Madeira, Portugal. Vi tvättar och städar båten. Märkligt nog är livsmedelsbutiken Hiper Dino öppen trots att det är söndag och vi gör några sista små matinköp, mest för att få den stärkande promenaden till och från affären. 
2023-03-27
Med oss på seglingen kommer Fredriks bror Hadar att vara. Han anländer på förmiddagen och kastas direkt in i verksamheten. Strax efter hans ankomst kastar vi loss. Vi har studerat väderleksutsikterna och ser att vi får bra vind i ett och ett halvt dygn, men därefter kommer vinden att avta. Vi rundar ön på sydsidan och sätter kurs rakt mot Madeira. Inledningsvis är sjön grov och det blir rejält skumpigt, men vinden håller sig runt 7-8 m/s.

Efter midnatt dämpas vågorna och vi gör fin fart i halv vind. Halvvägs passerar vi de spanska Selvagem islands på så stort avstånd av vi inte kan se dem. Under dagen byter vi ut den spanska gästflaggan mot en portugisisk. Solen skiner och vi kan till och med äta lunch med bordet uppfällt i sittbrunnen!

Vinden avtar alltmer och ser inte ut att bli bättre det närmaste dygnet. Framåt lunch ger vi upp och kör motor de sista timmarna mot Funchal. Marinan svarar varken på telefon eller VHF så vi ankrar strax utanför och njuter av en god paella-middag till ankars. Det smakar härligt efter två dygn till sjöss.

Marinan svarar direkt på vårt VHF-anrop och erbjuder oss plats. Vi kommer ihåg när vi låg till ankars tre dygn här för ett halvår sedan utan att få någon plats och accepterar därför direkt platsen trots att priset är högt. Vi förtöjer före lunch i marina Funchal. Härligt att vara tillbaka på Madeira!

Most things are closed as it is Sunday. We take an easy day, clean the boat and take a walk. In the evening we are invited to Norwegian sailor friends for a nice "sundowner". They had planned to sail around the Caribbean this winter but were so delayed that they decided to stay in the Canary Islands instead. They really had bad luck with the killer whales. They were heavily attacked when they almost arrived after crossing the Bay of Biscay. That attack resulted in being towed to port, lifted onto land and then five weeks of rudder and steering repairs. When they were eventually able to continue, they were attacked once more. Although they only suffered minor damages this time, it led to further delays. Really sad!
We feel very satisfied that we decided to take a different sailing route on the way home, partly to avoid the killer whales.

2023-03-20
There is usually a strong or moderate wind that follows the east coast of Fuerteventura.  In addition, our cruising guide says the current is almost always southerly here.
We leave and had intended to sail to the island of Isla del Lobo, which is off the northeast corner of Fuerteventura. But the tacking, bumpy sea and upstream made us (Maria) change our mind and instead we went into the marina Puerto del Rosario. The marina, which lacked both toilets and showers, is not worth writing about, but the harbour police, who collected the harbour fee, were nice when they realized that we had moored, despite television surveillance of the marina.
After today's cruise we were a little tired, so we had dinner on board and took a short evening walk in town.

2023-03-21
The moderate north-easterly wind continues and we cruise north. As we (Fredrik) anticipate that the wind and waves will spoil the sleep for us on Isla del Lobo, we continue to Lanzarote and anchor off Playa del Pozo. We are protected from the waves but the wind is moderate even though we are in a bay on the leeward side of Lanzarote. We are surprised. But at least we are safely anchored.

We stay at the anchorage and hope that the wind will decrease during the day. According to our cruising guide, this should be one of the Canary Islands' best anchorages. It might be true if it's calm, but it won't be calm during the day. We stay on board and refrain from trying to get ashore with the dinghy. Although the waves are not too bad where we anchored, we see how they break when they reach the beautiful sandy beach. We book a place for Salsa in marina Lanzarote for the following day instead.

We leave early and get another windy cruise up to marina Lanzarote which is located in Lanzarote's capital Arrecife. The marina is fairly newly built and very well maintained. Shops and restaurants are close by along the quay. Probably not because normal marina guests are particularly spendthrift, but because there is a berth for cruise ships right next to the marina and the cruise passengers pass along the marina's quay promenade when they want to stroll into the city centre. We eat an excellent dinner in the city. Tuna tartar and then squid taste wonderful when washed down with white wine from the volcanic wine region on Lanzarote.

Since the car rental office in the marina doesn’t have any available cars for us, we take a bus to the airport which is nearby and rent a car.
Lanzarote is the fourth largest island of the Canary Islands. The houses are usually low and almost entirely whitewashed. We start by visiting the Rubicon winery located in the volcanic wine district. We are amazed that there is any wine at all when you see the vines. Each vine is placed in a small crater with a stone wall around it. The crater is dug to find the soil under the volcanic ash. The stone walls shelter the vines from the wind. All harvesting must be done by hand.
We taste both red and white wines and buy a few bottles of the white wine with us.
It's a hot day so we continue to Playa del Mujeres, which is next to the bay where we previously were anchored, and take a swim in the high waves. As usual, it’s very windy and we realize that an attempt to go ashore with the dinghy would surely have ended badly.

2023-03-25
César Manrique is the name of the island's great artist and architect. It is claimed that he contributed for the houses to be low and white. We take the car to the north coast and look at the viewpoint Mirador del Plata. A lot of work has been done here to ensure that the viewpoint itself is pleasant and looks nice. We look out over the neighbouring island of La Graciosa, which is a national park. We anchored there six years ago after receiving permission from the authorities. We would have liked to do it again, but we were not able to get an anchor permit this time.
We continue to Manrigue’s masterpiece, Jameos del Agua. The architect has used a long lava tunnel to build a fantastic facility with an underground auditorium, pond and several restaurants. We can't help but be impressed.

2023-03-26
It is Sunday and we are preparing to leave Lanzarote and Spain and sail to Madeira in Portugal. We fix things on the boat. To our surprise the supermarket “Hiper Dino” is open on a Sunday and we fill up the storage of snacks for the night watches.

2023-03-27
Fredrik's brother Hadar arrives in the morning and is thrown straight into the sailing. We leave the marina shortly after his arrival. According to the weather forecast we will get good wind for a day and a half, but after that the wind will disappear. We round the island on the south side and head straight for Madeira. Initially, the sea is rough and it gets really bumpy, but the wind stays around 7-8 m/s.

The waves get smaller after midnight and we make good speed in the half wind. Halfway we pass the Spanish Selvagem islands at such a great distance that we cannot see them. During the day, we exchange the Spanish guest flag for the Portuguese one. The sun is shining and we can even have lunch in the cockpit with the table folded up!

We get less and less wind and it does not look like it will increase in the next 24 hours. Before lunch we start the engine and motor the last hours towards Funchal. The marina does not answer the phone or VHF, so we anchor just outside and enjoy a good paella dinner at anchor. After two days and two nights at sea it taste fantastic!

2023-03-30
The marina immediately answers our VHF call and offers us a berth. Six months ago we were anchored at the same place without getting a place in the marina, we therefore immediately accept the berth even though the high price. Before lunch we are moored in marina Funchal. We are happy to be back on Madeira!
