2023-04-28 Igår var hamnkaptenen ledig så incheckningen har fått anstå till idag. Velas är en liten stad, och kanske just därför också lite mindre formell. Det märks tydligt när Fredrik ska checka in. Eftersom marinan i Velas tillhör Portas Azores och har gemensamt datorsystem med marinorna på Santa Maria, San Miguel och Faial viftar hamnkaptenen bara avvärjande med handen när Fredrik vill visa skeppspapper, försäkringspapper och besättningens pass. ”Allt finns ju redan i datorn”, säger hamnkaptenen. Den enda som behövde ett svar var vilken som är Salsas nästa hamn och sedan är incheckningen klar. Något besök hos de olika poliserna GNR och SEF behövs inte här. Vi tar det lugnt ombord, fixar med båten, handlar lite mat, bokar en bil till morgondagen och kör en tvättmaskin i marinans fina lokaler.
2023-04-29 Maria har sedan tidigare ett gott rykte som småbilschaufför på slingriga bergsvägar och blir därför vald till chaufför. Henrik som har längst ben får vara kartläsare medan kapten får sitta i baksätet och övervaka och det hela. San Jorge är på hela Azorerna världsberömd för sina goda ostar. Vi inleder utflykten med att besöka osttillverkaren Finisterra och får testa på ost med olika lagringstid. Vi väljer att köpa en rejäl bit ost (1,9 kg) som varit lagrad i 11 månader. Vårt ostval beror på att osten är god men även för att den kan hyvlas med osthyvel. Det kan nästan inga ostar i Spanien och Portugal.
Vi besöker också världens nordligaste kaffeplantage, som för övrigt är Europas minsta. Det finns visst en till någonstans i Europa. Plantagen ligger vid öns södra kust och är ett litet familjeföretag med cirka 800 kaffeträd. Efter att ha druckit en kopp stark Arabica-espresso med en icke oangenäm bismak av salt och apelsin går vi en guidad rundvandring på plantagen och får förklaringen till smaken. Plantagens kaffeträd har planterats mellan apelsinträd för att få lite lä från Azorernas salta havsvindar.
Kaffebönorna plockas, torkas och hanteras hela vägen till drickbart kaffe för hand. Hela årsskörden ett bra år är cirka 800 kg och räcker därför bara till för plantagens eget kafé. Vi besöker också en imponerande anläggning med icke termiskt uppvärmda naturliga badpooler. Naturligtvis har vi glömt att ta med badkläder i ryggsäcken. Annars hade vi helt säkert badat i det cirka 18-gradiga vattnet.
2023-04-30 Man får inte sova ostört om man ligger i marinan i Velas. Marinan ligger intill en klippvägg som säkert är femtio meter hög. På klipphyllorna bor det mycket fåglar och en sort är Gulnäbbad Lira.
Till sjöss ser vi dem dagligen och uppskattar deras fantastiska flygkonst. Ofta är de bara en decimeter över vågorna.
På nätterna tjattrar de och det låter som om flera skolklasser var på nattbesök i marinan. Det är söndag så vi vilar oss ombord efter nattens fågeltjatter. Då får vi höra marschmusik. Direkt skyndar vi upp till torget och får se en kyrkoprocession marschera genom staden. De firar ”Den helige andes krona” ackompanjerad av fin musik från stadens orkester. Katoliker har mycket att stå i.
2023-05-01 Vi checkar ut från den trevliga marinan i Velas och seglar med vinden till vårt nästa mål, Terceira. På vägen försöker vi fotografera både Gulnäbbade Liror och delfiner.
Efter många försök får vi i alla fall till någon acceptabel bild på en Lira. Men delfinerna fortsätter att gäcka oss. Eftersom vi fått höra att Tercerias största stad håller på att bygga om sin marina väljer vi att gå till den mindre staden Praia do Vitoria på öns östra sida. Seglingen tar så lång tid att marinan är stängt för dagen när vi kommer fram så vi får lägga oss till ankars i en skyddad lagun utanför marinan.
2023-04-28 Yesterday the harbor master was off, so marina check-in has had to wait until today. Velas is a small town, and perhaps for that reason also a little less formal. That is clearly noticeable when Fredrik is going to check in. Since the marina in Velas belongs to Portas Azores and has a common computer system with the marinas on Santa Maria, San Miguel and Faial, the harbor master just waves his hand when Fredrik wants to show the ship's papers, insurance papers and the crew's passports. "Everything is already in the computer," says the harbor master. The only thing that needed an answer was “Which is Salsa's next port?” and then the check-in is done. A visit to the GNR and SEF police officers is not necessary. We relax on board, fix the boat, buy some food, book a car for tomorrow and run a washing machine in the marina's nice premises.
2023-04-29 Maria already has a good reputation as a small car driver on winding mountain roads and is therefore chosen as a driver. Henrik, who has the longest legs, is chosen as co-driver and map reader, while the captain supervise everything from the back. San Jorge is world famous throughout the Azores for its good cheeses. We begin the excursion by visiting the cheese manufacturer Finisterra and get to try cheese with different aging times. We choose to buy a large piece of cheese (1.9 kg) that has been stored for 11 months. Our choice of cheese is because the cheese tastes good but also because it can be planed with a cheese grater. Almost no cheeses in Spain and Portugal can. We also visit the world's northernmost coffee plantation, which is also Europe's smallest. There is probably another one somewhere in Europe. The plantation is located on the southern coast of the island and is a small family business with approximately 800 coffee trees. After drinking a cup of strong Arabica espresso with a not unpleasant aftertaste of salt and orange, we go on a guided tour of the plantation and get an explanation of the taste. The plantation's coffee trees have been planted between orange trees to get some shelter from the salty sea winds of the Azores. The coffee beans are picked, dried and handled all the way to drinkable coffee by hand. The entire annual harvest in a good year is around 800 kg and is therefore only enough for the plantation's own cafe. We also visit an impressive facility with non-thermally heated natural swimming pools. Of course, we forgot to bring swimwear in the backpack. Otherwise, we would certainly have been swimming in the approximately 18-degree water.
2023-04-30 You must not sleep undisturbed if you stay in the marina in Velas. The marina is next to a rock wall that is probably fifty meters high. Many birds live on the cliff shelves and one variety is the Cory Shearwater. At sea, we see them daily and appreciate their fantastic flying skills. Often they are only a decimeter above the waves. At night they chatter on the cliff shelves and it sounds as if several school classes were on a night visit to the marina. It's Sunday so we rest on board until we hear marching music. Then we rush up to the square and get to see a church procession march through the city and celebrate "The Crown of the Holy Spirit" accompanied by fine music from the city's orchestra.
2023-05-01 We check out of the nice marina in Velas and sail with the wind to our next destination, Terceira. On the way we try to photograph both Cory Shearwaters and dolphins. After many attempts, we finally get an acceptable picture of a bird. But the dolphins continue to elude us. Since we were told that the largest city in Terceria is rebuilding its marina, we choose to go to the smaller city of Praia do Vitoria on the eastern side of the island. The sailing takes so long that the marina is closed for the day when we arrive, so we have to anchor in a protected lagoon outside the marina.
