(ARC).

9/11. Hela
dagen är fylld med lärorika seminarier. Vi lyssnar på ”Management of emergencies”, ”Rigging”, ”Route &
Weather”, “Provisioning” och “Tips for Downwind sailing”.

13 båtar startar under
svensk flagg.

At the pontoon

6/11. The
activity is intense at the marina Muelle Deportivo. We are shown to a pontoon where
there are some other Swedish boats also preparing for the Atlantic crossing. Together
approximately 200 ARC participating boats representing 31 different countries.

7/11. Micke
left the boat to go home after a month at Salsa. Unfortunately he fell on the
airport bus and broke his arm. He can’t fly back to Sweden so he has to be operated
here in Gran Canaria before he can go home. Britt-Inger H made us a short visit
together with daughter, son-in-law and grandchild. Very nice too meet again. Also,
Maria´s father arrived to visit us for a few days. Otherwise we have spent the
day preparing for the tomorrow safety check, any remarks would hurt the
skippers pride so everything is checked and double-checked. In the evening as
every evening it is a sponsored mingle party called “ARC Sundowner” which
enables us to have a free beer or two and meet the crews from the other boats.

8/11. As
expected the safety control went smooth except for a few smaller remarks which were
of a kind that our experienced skipper did not fully agree with the ARC
controller. But we will fix them. Actually
we got the impression that the “inspector” had to find some complaints,
otherwise he might be judged as a poor safety guy. Maria and her dad Staffan
went on a nice “Las Palmas Historic City Tour”. In the evening Hadar arrives
after his short visit in Sweden and now is supposed to stay onboard until St
Lucia where his wife Eva will be standing on a pontoon welcoming us. Hadar´s bag was
full of things ordered both for the boat and the crew (mainly Swedish candy)
which we later found out also is provided by the IKEA in Las Palmas.

9/11. The
day is spent on interesting seminars e.g.”Management of Emergencies”, ”Rigging”,
”Route & Wheather, “Provisioning” and “Tips for Downwind Sailing”. The people
presenting have a lot of experience, several of them have a made couple of
tours around the globe so the quality is high and even if we felt well prepared
we got some really valuable information and advices. Maria has been advised that induction plates
can be bought at IKEA. She goes there and come back with both an induction
plate, Kalles caviar and a bottle of glögg. We will probably taste the glögg on the first of advent when we are in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

10/11. The
daily schedule is now a routine and comprise of seminars, work to improve the
boat, provisioning, and socializing with the other ARC crews. Even if we thought
that we had everything fixed, talking with the other crews gives new ideas and
we have ended up with a minor but still “to-do list”. This evening the Rolnautic
chandlery has invited us to a great party with drinks, tapas and live music. A
fantastic party and to top Sweden did beat Italy 1-0 in the qualification
game for next years’ World Cup in Russia.

11/11. In the
afternoon mr Bill Orr arrives after a 34 hours flight from Honolulu and the
crew is now complete. Bill brought some professional fishing equipment and three
portable fans that will fight the heat on the crossing of the Atlantic. The
temperature is expected to pass 35 degrees Celsius and shadow is a rare
phenomenon in the middle of the ocean.

12/11. Today the ARC Opening Ceremony took place;
it started with all the participants in a parade ended at the outer pier in the
marina where a local celebrity wished us welcome and a safe trip to St Lucia
(in spanish) and also the World Cruising Clubs Managing Director (in english).
Finally on a given signal all the 31 nation flags were hoisted and the ARC was
declared open. We are 13 Swedish boats and also some charter boats under a
British flag but with Swedish crew.
